People are adding peanuts to coca-cola in revival of favorite Southern food trend
The South's history of combining the sweet and savory is both long and varied. But somehow it's this one that's winning the flavor combo lottery.

While coming up with different flavor combos is a pastime for many, you have to admit that not all are created equal, or even very good, for that matter.

But in the name of flavor pioneering, people have come up with some pretty odd and off-the-wall combos. The best of them usually combine sweet and savory flavors. (Let’s face it, pickles and ice cream just isn’t for everyone).

On the other hand, dumping peanuts in coca-cola seems to be a food trend everyone can get behind.

What is nice about sharing food trends is that people can also share food traditions, which will allow us to understand other people’s cultures and history.

Experimenting with the flavors of other cultures enriches life in ways you can’t imagine.

Based on a post from The National Peanut Federation’s site, this food and drink combination originated in the early 1920s.

It is said that some workers didn’t have water readily available for them to wash their hands, so it was impossible for them to eat their peanut snacks.

As with most things, genius is born of necessity.

For convenience, these workers began putting their peanuts in their bottles of coke to get the best of both worlds.

And a flavor star was born.

We get it, and it does make sense. The sweet taste of peanuts that is mixed with something fizzy and sweet? It’s actually addicting once you have tried it.

It blends so well, and you’d want to eat it again – that’s for sure.

However, people who have tried this have a warning for everyone.

Don’t attempt to try it with diet coke or coke zero.

Apparently, if you do, it will taste very bad. It might have something to do with artificial sweeteners. Diet coke or coke zero only has alternative sweeteners; so they end up ruining the flavor of this southern treat.

The artificial reacts differently with the peanuts, so instead of giving it a sweet-salty taste, it turns out to be bitter and unappetizing.

Now that you know how it works, you have to try it for yourself to believe how delicious it is. How do you prepare this cool treat?

All you have to do is grab a bag of salted peanuts (yes, you need to make sure they’re salted) and dump them in a bottle of coke.

Let it sit for a few minutes to allow the flavors to come together and then just give her a swig! Make sure to chew up any nuts before swallowing, though. We wouldn’t want a choking hazard on our hands.
