Your home should be your safe place.

It’s where we hide our secrets and vulnerabilities. It’s where we come to relax and escape from the world. To know that this private space has been invaded can be a traumatic experience. Unfortunately, however, a few people who believed that their home was their safe spot ended up discovering it wasn’t as private as they had thought.

Tracy, from South Carolina, had been hearing strange noises in her house.

The single mother of five had told her children about hearing noises, but they had convinced her it was all in her head.

In an interview with ABC News, she recalled:

“The kids were saying, ‘You’re getting old. You’re hearing things. You’re crazy.'”

“I kept hearing a bumpin’, thumpin’ noise. It was either something or somebody was in the attic.”

One night, while Tracy was on the computer, she heard a noise coming from above her.

When she glanced up, to her surprise, she saw nails popping out of the bedroom ceiling.

A few hours later, at 2:30 am, she was awoken from her sleep by more banging. That’s when the terrified mother called her nephew to come investigate.

The nephew climbed into the attic and was shocked to see a strange man standing there.

It turns out it was Tracy’s ex-boyfriend from twelve years earlier.

Judging from the evidence, he had been secretly living in her attic for the past few weeks.

Stunned, the family phoned the authorities— but the man, smiling, walked off without any explanation before the police could apprehend him. Her nephew said the man had been watching Tracy in her bedroom through a crack in the air vent.

“He had packed all the old coats and jackets into the heating unit and was sleeping in the heating unit,” said Tracy.

“It’s got me flabbergasted. How can you look at someone through an air vent?”

What’s even more unsettling is that the family has no idea how he got into their home.

And these terrifying stories seem to be occurring more frequently.

Amber Dawn’s heart froze in her chest when she realized she’d been living with a stranger for the past six months.

Upon moving into the apartment, Amber had immediately started hearing footsteps in the attic.

She told the Criminal podcast:

“I wasn’t quite sure why I would be hearing that, but whenever you move into a new apartment, you start to notice all the different sounds that a particular space makes and so I wasn’t quite sure what it was.”

But then weird things started happening.

At first, cans of soda and soup started going missing. But Amber just assumed her brother, who lived a few blocks away and had a spare key, had been raiding her kitchen for snacks.

One day, after leaving her new puppy in the bathroom while she went to work, Amber got a call telling her that the room had flooded.

Expecting to come home to a grim scene, she was puzzled to find the puppy safe in the sink.

“There’s no way she could have gotten into the sink,” Amber later told the Fraser Coast Chronicle.

“She was a little puppy; the toilet was far enough away from the sink that she wouldn’t have been able to climb.”

Later, however, Amber would learn she had been living with a stranger for 6 months.

One day, Amber had stayed home from work sick. She poured herself a hot bath then glanced up and realized that the attic’s trap door was hanging open. That’s when she put all the pieces together.

“I put it all together, I was like ‘OK, the footsteps the first night, the doors being closed when I had left them open, the missing food, my dog in the sink.”

“There was someone living in my house with me.”

Amber immediately located the authorities – and although police located food, a book, and a sleeping bag in her attic, the man had fled before police could apprehend him.
