25 criminal charges ranging from drug trafficking to money laundering faced Apex Police Department Captain Ann Stephens. Ironic, especially when she was hearing about the news over the phone.
The caller even claimed that Stephens was moments away from being arrested. Another irony is that the call was from someone with a very strong accent normally heard in the eastern part of the world.
It’s a call that’s gone viral, and rightly so as it helps warn people about these scammers.
The YouTube video alone has 24,524,297 views.
Stephens reiterated to the public that one should never, ever give out sensitive information over the phone regardless of who is asking or who they are representing. Don’t even verify anything they ask of you.
The callers were initially men who used the names of “John Black” and “Jason Brown.” These two asked Captain Stephens for her address and the last four digits of her social security number.
Jason and John were claiming that there were numerous charges filed against her. And during the call, they kept asking for an address.
“No, I’m not going to give you my address. If you have my file on me, you should know what my address is.”
Answered the calm police captain.
Stephens eventually gave the address for the police department – 205 Saunders Street.
It was the usual scam call with the caller making up all the excuses in the world just so he could get Stephens’ information. For every answer she gave, there was a weird reason on the other end.
John and Jason even went so far to say that the call was being monitored by several agencies.
Little did they know that the captain was having fun at their expense.
Then the caller asks how many bank accounts she has. Stephens has her exchange with the caller before she asks to speak to whoever was in charge. That person in charge sounded like he meant business.
Unfortunately for him, Stephens was way ahead of them.
When the men on the other end realized that they were not getting anything out of the savvy police captain, they abruptly ended the call. Captain Stephens had this to say,
“If somebody calls and says they’re the Social Security Administration, hang up and call them back yourself. Call the number on the Social Security Administration website or IRS website and talk to them, but none of those agencies will ever ask for your information over the phone so that should be your first sign it’s a scam.”
Lots of people have fun with scam callers. Others just simply hang up.
It’s no different from scam e-mails, SMS messages, and the like. Anything that asks for your sensitive information, or claims that you won a prize is a big scam waiting to happen.
Captain Stephens even looks at the camera, shakes her head, and mouths noooo when the man was pressing for her information. Take a page out of the captain’s book. Be careful, but don’t forget to have some fun.
